BIA Urges Rapid Settlement of Insurance Claims After Airport Fire

Following a massive fire at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) has urged relevant insurance companies to take immediate action. The association emphasized the need for prompt verification and settlement of insurance claims for affected customers.

BIA President Saeed Ahmed stated that the incident could have a severe impact on import-export trade. To maintain the confidence of affected businesses and quickly mitigate financial losses, he stressed that insurance claim settlement processes should be expedited. He called on insurance companies to immediately contact affected clients, assess the damages, form active claims settlement teams, and coordinate closely with airport authorities and trade organizations.

Saeed Ahmed further suggested that insurance companies should quickly prepare a list of affected clients, assist in collecting evidence of losses, and activate damage assessment and claims resolution procedures. These steps, he said, would support the recovery of business operations and strengthen customer confidence in the insurance sector.

Industry insiders noted that the BIA president’s appeal would encourage the insurance sector to act more responsibly and proactively. They emphasized that the fire is not merely an infrastructural disaster but also a major shock to the national economy, making swift and effective action by insurance companies crucial for the recovery of affected businesses and restoring market confidence.

The fire occurred on October 18 (Saturday) around 2:30 PM at the import section of the Cargo Village near Gate 8 of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. 37 fire service units worked for several hours to bring it under control. During this period, domestic and international flights were temporarily suspended.

At least 25 Ansar personnel were injured, and a large quantity of imported goods, electronic items, and garment export samples were destroyed in the blaze.
