Hong Kong Insurers Accelerate Relief After Tai Po Fire
Following the devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, Hong Kong, insurers have announced expanded financial relief measures and accelerated claims processing for residents affected by the incident. Regulators, industry bodies, and major insurance companies are actively reaching out to the injured and bereaved families to ensure timely support.
As of 3 December, an estimated 8,700 insurance policies may be affected, encompassing both life and non-life policies. Among these, approximately 1,100 are non-life policies, while 7,600 are life insurance policies. In response, the Insurance Authority (IA) has established a dedicated task force to ensure prompt communication and the efficient resolution of claims for those impacted.
Clement Cheung, Chief Executive of the IA, stated that the authority is coordinating closely with the Hospital Authority to obtain contact details of casualties and their families. This collaboration allows insurers to engage directly with policyholders and expedite support measures.
An engineering consultancy involved in the fire has ceased operations, and Cheung noted that certain claims may involve legal complexities. In such cases, the IA has pledged to provide mediation and guidance. Meanwhile, insurers continue to actively manage and process claims arising from the incident.
To ensure immediate access to benefits, insurance companies have introduced several measures, including: advance cash payments, temporary premium holidays, proactive agent outreach, waivers for death certificate requirements, and reductions or waivers of interest on policy loans.
Several insurers have announced specific emergency support initiatives. Prudential Hong Kong and Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) will provide a one-off emergency payment of HK$20,000 to each individual hospitalised in connection with the fire. Separately, Chubb Group has pledged HK$10 million to fund emergency relief efforts, mental health services, and contributions to the Hong Kong Red Cross.
The Insurance Authority emphasises that these interventions are designed to minimise financial disruption and provide rapid assistance while the affected individuals navigate recovery and claim procedures. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and encourage policyholders to contact their insurers promptly.
