SINGAPORE – Personnel from the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will see their life and personal injury insurance coverage rise from $300,000 to $350,000 from 1 November, benefiting around 500,000 individuals, including full-time national servicemen, operationally ready national servicemen, regulars and volunteers.
The two ministries announced the enhancement in a joint statement on 31 October, noting that the adjustment is part of their continued efforts to strengthen support and recognition for those serving in national defence and public safety roles.
Introduced in 2016, the group insurance scheme — comprising the Group Term Life and Group Personal Accident policies — initially provided coverage of $150,000 per policy. The initiative was among 30 recommendations made by the Committee to Strengthen National Service to enhance welfare and recognition for servicemen.
On 1 January 2023, the coverage amounts were doubled, and the personal accident policy was replaced with a broader personal injury scheme.
“Insured personnel who wish to extend their protection or include dependants can purchase additional coverage from the appointed insurer, Singlife,” the ministries said.
According to Singlife’s website, the maximum coverage for both policies is capped at $1 million each.
