ACU Secures New Insurance Partner with Berkshire Hathaway After Two-Year Overhaul

The Auto-Cycle Union (ACU), the governing body for motorcycle sport in the UK, has announced Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance as its new insurance provider, effective 1 November 2025. This move follows a two-year overhaul of the ACU’s safety and insurance management processes, aimed at improving coverage for riders, organisers, and officials across the sport.

Previously, the ACU had faced challenges in securing economically competitive insurance, prompting the launch of a comprehensive review of its risk management practices. This process culminated in an insurance partner day held in March 2025, organised in collaboration with long-standing broker partner Lockton. The event was attended by 11 major insurers, providing the ACU with the opportunity to showcase its sporting and regulatory activities and kickstart a competitive renewal process.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance emerged as the winning insurer, offering enhanced terms, including £40 million in public liability cover for events as standard, as well as personal accident cover included as part of a rider’s licence. Riders in competitive events will also benefit from an improved personal accident policy, which now provides a hospital benefit after 72 hours of hospitalisation, compared to the previous 14-day waiting period.

Matthew Edwards-Wear, CEO of the ACU, commented: “On the eve of our last renewal, we were facing a significant premium increase, with only one insurer willing to provide a quote. We knew we had to change this and were committed to addressing it before this renewal period. Following significant work around our risk management activities and industry engagement, we’ve seen genuine competition return, which is a real turning point. It confirms that motorcycle sport in the UK is not only viable but insurable. The new insurance package will deliver tangible benefits at all levels of the sport.”
