Nagad Partners With Postal Department For Life Insurance Premiums

The Bangladesh Post Office has formalised a strategic agreement with the mobile financial service provider, Nagad, to digitalise the premium collection process for Postal Life Insurance (PLI). This collaboration, finalised on Wednesday at the Dak Bhaban, aims to eliminate the traditional requirement for policyholders to visit physical post office branches and wait in queues to settle their instalments. Under this new arrangement, customers can now remit their insurance premiums remotely and securely through the Nagad mobile application.

The signing ceremony featured key representatives from both organisations. On behalf of the Directorate of Posts, the agreement was signed by Mohammad Abdul Hannan, Additional General Manager (Eastern Zone, Dhaka), and Pradip Kumar, Additional General Manager (Western Zone, Rangpur). Representing Nagad was Mohammad Shamsul Islam, the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of the institution. This move is viewed as a significant step towards the digital transformation of state-led financial services in Bangladesh.

Comprehensive Policy Coverage and Benefits

The integration encompasses all categories of policies currently offered under the Postal Life Insurance scheme. This allows for a more inclusive digital transition across various insurance products, including:

  • Whole Life Insurance: Policies designed to provide coverage throughout the lifetime of the insured.

  • Endowment Insurance: Schemes that combine savings with life cover over a specified term.

  • Fixed Term Insurance: Policies tailored for specific durations.

  • Marriage Insurance: Dedicated financial products aimed at securing funds for matrimonial expenses.

Historically, the estimated 200,000 policyholders under the PLI umbrella were restricted to making payments during official business hours at designated post office counters. The introduction of the Nagad payment gateway facilitates 24-hour access to premium settlements, providing a seamless and secure digital environment for financial transactions. This shift is expected to significantly reduce the administrative burden on physical post office infrastructure while improving the overall customer experience.

Procedure For Digital Premium Payment

To utilise this service, customers are required to navigate the Nagad mobile interface. The process has been designed for simplicity and efficiency to ensure that even users with basic digital literacy can manage their accounts:

  1. Access the ‘Bill Pay’ section within the Nagad application.

  2. Select ‘Postal Life Insurance’ or ‘PLI’ from the list of service providers.

  3. Enter the unique Policy Number and the required premium amount.

  4. Confirm the transaction using the secure PIN.

Upon the successful completion of the payment, the system generates an instantaneous digital receipt. Furthermore, the customer receives a confirmation short message service (SMS), which serves as a formal electronic record of the transaction for future reference and audit purposes. This digital trail ensures transparency and provides policyholders with immediate peace of mind regarding their policy status.

Leadership Perspectives On Digital Transformation

During the ceremony, Kazi Asadul Islam, Director General of the Directorate of Posts, emphasised that this initiative would not only provide swifter services to citizens but also accelerate the broader digital transition of the postal department. He noted that integrating modern financial technology into traditional services is essential for maintaining relevance in a digital-first economy.

Echoing these sentiments, the Administrator of Nagad, Mohammad Motasim Billah, stated that the opportunity to deposit premiums through Nagad would alleviate customer suffering by saving considerable time and logistical effort. He highlighted that such partnerships are crucial for fostering financial inclusion across the country, especially for those in remote areas who may find it difficult to reach physical government offices.

The event was also attended by senior officials from the Directorate of Posts, including S.M. Harunur Rashid, Additional Director General (Accounts and Establishment); Parveen Banu, Additional Director General (Supply and Inspection); and Mohammad Zakir Hasan Nur, Additional Director General (Postal Service and Planning). High-ranking executives from Nagad were also present to witness the signing, marking a new chapter in the synergy between state-run services and private fintech innovation.
