The LIAJ chief identifies three priority areas for Japan’s life insurance in 2026.

Japan’s life insurance sector is set to focus on three principal priorities in 2026: strengthening customer trust, promoting sustainability, and enhancing public understanding. This was announced by Yukinori Takada, Chairperson of the Life Insurance Association of Japan (LIAJ), in his New Year’s message.

Chairman Takada emphasised that the life insurance industry, long a cornerstone of future financial security, now faces heightened responsibility amid rising natural disasters, demographic shifts, and evolving social challenges. “The time has come for the industry to implement its fundamental duties at a renewed, elevated level,” he stated.

The first priority, customer-centric initiatives, aims to safeguard policyholders’ interests. This includes enhancing compliance and risk management in direct sales channels, and providing guidance to independent agencies to ensure the proper implementation of the Insurance Business Act. By doing so, LIAJ seeks to reinforce public confidence and transparency in insurance practices.

The second priority is supporting a sustainable society, under the theme of creating a “well-aligned future.” Key initiatives include:

  • Hosting symposiums on healthy lifestyles

  • Publishing reports addressing unconscious bias

  • Promoting female leadership within member companies

The third priority involves improving public understanding of the industry. This initiative focuses on showcasing the sector’s work and societal contributions, including:

  • Highlighting the efforts of insurance sales professionals

  • Presenting the history of life insurance and its evolution alongside social events

The following table summarises these priorities and their illustrative initiatives:

Priority Area Core Focus Illustrative Initiatives
Customer-Centric Initiatives Acting in customers’ best interests Enhanced compliance in direct sales, support for independent agencies
Sustainable Society Support Promoting social sustainability Health symposiums, unconscious bias reports, increasing female leadership
Public Understanding Raising awareness of industry work Showcasing insurance professionals, highlighting industry history and evolution

Chairman Takada further remarked, “At this centennial milestone, the life insurance industry will continue to uphold its historic responsibilities, striving for a society where everyone can live healthily, safely, and peacefully.”

The message is clear: Japan’s life insurance industry is prioritising not only financial security but also social responsibility, sustainable development, and public awareness. The 2026 roadmap reflects a comprehensive vision, positioning the sector as a proactive contributor to both individual well-being and societal progress.
